The Lake

I winced, "Sure..." I said.

Haru stood up with her grocery bag (after taking out the rest of the ice-packs and leaving them in a pile near Kiane). "I'll be right back...keep those ice packs on it." Haru said in serious tone. She then turned, glanced at Kiane over her shoulder, then began to run toward town while trying not to spill her groceries.

I kept the ice packs on it...

Haru made the stop home quick. Of course the house had been empty: her dad was hardly around these days. Haru quickly found her large medical bag, slung it over her shoulder, and rushed out the door (being sure to lock it). By the time she returned to the lake, she was out of breath.Luckily she didn't live that far away. "I'm...back..." Haru huffed, glad to see Kiane had listened to her about the ice packs.

I had small tears falling down my face...

"I'm sorry Kiane-san..."Haru said sadly. She hated seeing him--anyone--hurt like this. She proceeded to treat the wound, spraying it with ointment and wrapping it in bandages. She tried to be as gentle as possible. She glanced at Kiane as she wrapped his arm, wanting to ask what happened, but for some reason the words wouldn't come.

"...Damn it....." I said as small tears fell.

"Kiane-san..."Haru sighed, trying to fight tears at seeing him like this. "May I ask what happened?" she asked softly, almost whispered, as she touched his back gently wanting to comfort him.

"My step-father.." I maniged to get out, among tears.

Haru felt a pain inside her.That's exactly what she didn't want to hear. A tear slid down her cheek and she took off her glasses to wipe it away. "Why?" she asked softly, not really expecting him to answer. She rubbed his back in slow circles like she always did when her sisters cried.

"Because I yelled at him about Alex..." I said tears still falling.

"What's wrong with Alex?" Haru asked, worry plain in her voice. She didn't know what she would do if her new little brother had been hurt...but it wouldn't be pretty.

"He kicked Alex out of the house and abandoned him! I got furious and yelled at him.." I said crying lightly.

Haru wiped away a few more tears. It was selfish of her to be sad. Kiane and Alex were the ones suffering. What she needed to do now was listen. "So he..." Haru sadly glanced at Kiane's bandaged arm. "Did that..."

"Yea..." I said wiping my tears away.

"I'm...so sorry, Kiane-san..." Haru said, reaching into her kit and pulling out a packet of tissues. She held it out to Kiane,still watching him in concern. "How can I help?" Haru thought of a few ways, but half of them would probably result in her in jail.

I looked away, "Just help, me keep Alex happy..." I said.

Haru nodded. "Of course Kiane-san...I'll do everything I can..." Haru looked down at Kiane's bandaged arm. "But...We really need to get you to the hospital..."

"No..." I said.

"Please Kiane-san..."Haru pleaded. 'Those bandages are only temporary...we need to get you professional treatment."

"No..." I said.

Haru sighed. "At least tell me why not."

"....Don't judge me when i tell you.....I'm scared of doctors so i avoid them..." I said, feeling like a child.

Haru laughed once, trying to lighten the mood. "Well you don't seem to be scared of me." she winked. "But I know what you mean...I stay away from hospitals myself...the place itself makes me sick."

I looked at her. I laughed lightly.
